Praire Girl Bakery Review

Prairie Girl Bakery on Urbanspoon

Location: 18 King Street East Unit 106, Toronto ON

Website: http://prairiegirlbakery.com/

Prairie Girl Bakery has the perfect location. It is located in the downtown core and is walking distance from my workplace. I enjoy the easy accessibility as a good cupcake is always in reach. Out of all the cupcake places I have tried in Toronto, Prairie Girl is my second favourite. The cakes are yummy and the buttercream are nice. The store is really well designed as the cupcakes are in shelves and have their own spot on their respective shelf. They make all their flavours daily with a special flavour of the week. However, I recommend that you go early (around lunch time) as the popular flavours tend to sell out quickly. They offer two sizes, regulars and minis. The regulars are the largest cupcakes that I have had in Toronto. They are huge and the priciest cupcakes too. But justified, as they are 1/3 bigger than average size.

I prefer classic flavours for cupcakes and this is Prairie Girl’s strong suit. I have tried most of their flavours in both sizes. The minis are good, but I enjoy the regulars more. They are definitely filling and don’t leave me craving another, unlike the minis. My favourite cupcakes are the Red Velvet with Vanilla and Chocolate Buttercream (not on their website), Chocolate Peanut Butter, Banana Peanut Butter and the Toasted Marshmallow on Chocolate Cake (It was a flavour of the week). The reason Prairie Girls doesn’t dethrone my favourite cupcake place, The Wedding Cake Shoppe (click here for the review), is that the buttercream to cupcake ratio is crazy. Each cupcake has a mountain of buttercream. A good thing if your favourite part is of a cupcake is the frosting. Additionally, the cupcakes are on the sweeter side and I prefer lighter and fluffier cakes. The buttercream is also denser and heavier while the Wedding Cake Shoppe’s is more airy and flavourful without being extra sweet. However, I’m being nitpicky for the purposes of this review.

I also have a slight problem with the box (see above). I understand that the typical plastic containers are bad for the environment, but it’s really hard to carry the cupcakes without topping them over. I had a seat on the TTC and still was unable to get the cupcakes home without some cupcake casualties. The box is really pretty though. Overall, the cakes are solid and the buttercream is good. If you ever need a cupcake craving filled, Prairie Girl Bakery is a great place to swing by.

Delicious cupcakes! I love to taste different kind of them, however since doctor tell me I was overweight I decide to ignore them and started to eat fruits and vegetables.
